Breed Type and History

The Great Dane has never had anything to do with Denmark (although I am certain some live there lol)! This regal breed was developed primarily in Germany to hunt wild boar and came from Greyhound and Mastiff lines. In 1876 The Great Dane was declared the national breed of Germany. The original boarhound was very different in temperament and physical build to the Dane that has been developed as a pet in modern times. The Great Dane’s alternative title is commonly ‘Gentle Giant’

Physical Description

The overall appearance of the Dane is that of a giant powerful dog but with a sleek and elegant build.
It has a long narrow head (more rounded than a Greyhound) balanced on a elegant yet muscular neck. Its front legs are perfectly straight while the hind legs have muscular thighs. The tail is medium-length and the ear are either cropped (long, pointed and carried erect) or left natural (lying against the sides of the head with a slight rise where the ear meets the base of the skull). Its eyes are round and usually dark – with a lively intelligent expression. All Danes have short, thick, shiny, close-fitting hair. The colour of the coat may be fawn, brindle, black, blue, mantle harlequin and sometimes Merle.

About Limited AKC Registration

Limited registration is for people and dogs that are going to be pets, hunting companions,  test or other AKC sanctioned event contests.  They will NOT however, be used as breeding animals. Not because there is anything necessarily wrong with them, but because either the breeder or the owner has decided that they will not/should not produce puppies.  The dog with the Limited reg. papers IS registered!  The only difference is that any puppies from him or her recognized/registered by the AKC. (Limited registration can be changed at a later time from purchase to Full registration by the breeder once the dog has meet whatever criteria the breeder has set forth to do so.)

About Full AKC Registration

Full AKC registration simply means that one of our Blue Great Dane pups (or dogs) is being sold with full breeding rights and that any puppies produced, when he/she is ethically mated to another full AKC registered Great Dane, are eligible for AKC registration – either full or limited, depending on the agreement between the breeder and the new owner.
